Support for 4:2:2 Color Sampling in Adobe Premiere Pro & Media Encoder is now available on the latest NVIDIA Blackwell Desktop & Laptop GPUs.
Today, the company announced that support for 4:2:2 is a game-changer for professional video editors who can now retain the same color info as 4:4:4 video while significantly reducing file sizes. Plus, the 4:2:2 mode also achieved better color grading and chroma keying by utilizing color information to isolate a specific range of hues. This maximizes both efficiency and quality.
Some of the main features of the new 4:2:2 video mode include:
Increased Color Accuracy: 10-bit 4:2:2 retains more color information compared with 8-bit 4:2:0, leading to more accurate color representation and better color grading results.
More Flexibility: The extra color data allows for increased flexibility during color correction and grading, enabling more nuanced adjustments and corrections.
Improved Keying: 4:2:2 is particularly beneficial for keying — including green screening — as it enables cleaner, more accurate extraction of the subject from the background, as well as cleaner edges of small keyed objects like hair.
Smaller File Sizes: Compared with 4:4:4, 4:2:2 reduces file sizes without significantly impacting picture quality, offering an optimal balance between quality and storage. Combining 4:2:2 support with NVIDIA hardware increases creative possibilities.
The 4:2:2 video mode will be supported by the entire list of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Desktop and Laptop GPUs, including the newly released RTX PRO “Blackwell” lineup.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 GPUs running on Microsoft’s Windows 11 OS also come with GPU-powered decode acceleration in HEVC and H.265 10-bit 4:2:2 formats, which deliver faster-than-real-time playback without stuttering. This also helps ease the load on the CPU, freeing up the system resources for multi-app workflows and creative tasks. The 9th Gen NVENC (NVIDIA Video Encoder) engine provides an 8% uplift in BD-BR video encoding efficiency.
